face to face organics

15 Jan

Face to face organics is something I am really excited about! If you like Toms and their mission, you’ll love face to face!

It’s USDA approved organic peppermint lip balm. But it way’s more than that. For every tube that is purchased, face to face gives $1 toward a smile-healing surgery for a child in need. They partner with Project Harar Ethiopia, and you can check out more about their mission here.

My lip balm came in the mail a couple of days ago, and I love the peppermint flavor, and that I am sharing smiles!

October Overview

30 Oct

It’s been busy! Our October events for the park district are over and we don’t have any events in November, so things are slowing down. But nannying and having fun with my kids will always keep me busy. Below are a couple of recipes we’ve made over the past weeks and some crafts I’ve used with my nanny kids.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip CookiesImage

Verdict? I will always come back to this recipe!

Chicken Parm

Verdict? It was good right out of the oven, but not good for leftovers.

Crock Pot Sausage Egg Bake
Image

Verdict? Uhh..it wasn’t very flavorful and I don’t think I would buy the sausage from Aldi again. I would rather do a egg bake in the oven next time.

We’ve been having spider problems, and I am not talking about daddy longlegs because those don’t exist in Illinois..

When I spotted it, the first thing I did was run and put on my rain boots, I did not want that thing coming toward me without proper footwear. I killed him, but I kind of want to erase the photo from my computer because he is so gross.

In lieu of Halloween we made Q-tip skeletons today!

Throwing clay

25 Sep

The pottery class I’ve been taking through the community is really great! Here’s a peek at what I’ve been making.

Bowls dipped in high-fire glaze

An asymmetrical bowl I salvaged from the junk pile and hand painted with 2 glazes, that when fired, interact with each other to give it its unique look
Square plate with lace overlay, next time I will hand paint instead of dipping- lost too much of the textureThe original lace overlay experiment, now kind of like a dish

Throwing on the wheel is harder than it looks. Weirdly, it takes strong fingers to be able to create an even opening and sides of the same thickness. I might stick to making plates because those I can make of out slabs of clay, which we have a machine to do for me.

I am also in the middle of a lamp renovation, photos will be shared when I finish!

621

14 Sep

The fall weather has been reminding me of last fall, which is probably pretty common for a lot of people. But, it has especially got me missing the 621. The 621 is the address of the house I lived at last school year with my amazing, and I really mean amazing, 10 other roommates. When people would find out that we were living in a house with 11 girls, they thought we were crazy and like some mini-sorority. People would ask “How can you do that? All that drama?!” But, our house was different, the 11 of us were living intentionally with each other, all wanting to grow in Christ.

It is so fun thinking back on everything that happened in that house… somehow having the best conversations while we were packed in our kitchen and crammed in the stairwell. The endless pranks, especially something involving Katelyn M, a (missing) towel, and the shower, or sticky doorknobs, or a letter from our rental company demanding payment for the damages the happened to the corner of the house when someone tore it off while driving in reverse.

This time last year my mom would bring the 621 apples from my family’s backyard. If we weren’t devouring them by the handful, we were all making apple cinnamon oatmeal for breakfast.

I remember trying to do work-out videos together and aligning everyone’s schedule so we could hang out as a house, very difficult with 11 busy women! I wish I would have wrote more memories down because the year I spent in that house was the best year of my life. Sounds cheesy, but there is never a dull moment when you live with 10 others!

It’s also really exciting that we get to pass the house on to 11 equally wonderful ladies, knowing that they will love the 621 and carry on its legacy (like 5 generations and counting!).

Sarah, Katelyn, Colleen, Nou, Val, Morgan, Allison, Kelly, Katelyn, and Katie, I can’t wait till I am reunited with you all at the next 621 wedding ;-)

I love the cinnamon roasted nuts you can buy at festivals, sporting events, farmer’s markets. They are just so good, but I don’t like spending $3 just to get the small bag with 16 almonds in it. And since fall is around the corner, although here in Chambana it feels like fall on the weekends, but summer during the weekdays, I was starting to think I was back in Minnesota with the bipolar weather, anyway cinnamon roasted nuts are fun to make in the fall because they make the house smell good.

I found this recipe and I picked it because it used less sugar than others. Verdict? The almonds are good, Ryan likes them, but I would enjoy something a bit more sweet like the one’s you can buy at those wonderful smelling stands, so more brown sugar next time.

I started my special events internship last week with the Champaign Park District. I am helping to plan an event called Halloween Funfest, which has been really fun, especially because I like halloween. We also have some unique 5k events that we’re working on. However, I am still looking for a paid job because girl has to bring home the bacon some how! But what I am going to do for a career seems like a big mystery. I feel like I want to do my undergrad all over again, pick a different major, utilize certain opportunities. But Ryan has been encouraging me to hold fast to 2 verses in particular, both happen to be in James.

James 1:2, Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials
James doesn’t say if we face trials, he says whenever because he knows that we will face trials.

James 1: 6a, But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt
This is huge, when I am asking God to provide me with a job, I need to believe that he will.

Ryan and I have also been church shopping since we moved to Chambana. We’ve visited 3 churches, all very different and nothing quite like Substance Church, which we were going to in Minneapolis. But, if you’re in the Minneapolis area and you’re looking for a church, check out Substance, it is the most dynamic, unique church I’ve ever been to. Part of me will always want to find a church like Substance, but church isn’t about the worship, messages, the building, it’s about the people who commit to doing life together.

One of the churches we visited is huge, it has its own indoor playground that anyone in the community can use for free!

On a final note, Ryan and I had ribs from Aldi’s, I was a little skeptical, but they were great! Ryan said that if I didn’t grow up in Minnesota, I would fit perfectly into southern culture because I love barbeque sauce and pick up trucks.
